My Favorite “Natural” Beauty Products

OMG I cant believe it’s September already! Where did the summer go?! I love summer, but I adore fall.  I’m getting excited for sweaters, boots and pumpkin spice lattes. 😉 I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourite beauty products with you. I never used to read the label of beauty products and check out their ingredients. These days I’m more concerned about what I’m putting into and onto my body. There are a lot of nasty, harmful  ingredients in makeup, shampoo and creams that get absorbed into your body, yuck! So I try to buy products that are FREE from parabens, paraffins, phthalates, formaldehyde and aluminum. It’s not easy to know what each ingredient does and if it’s bad for you. My rule of thumb is to buy deodorant that is free from aluminum, as it is thought to be cancer causing. For creams and shampoo, I try to buy brands that state that the are free from parabens and sulphates. Once I find a brand I like and trust its a lot easier to go shopping!

I do have to order some of my favourite products online, like the PiperWai charcoal deodorant I use. The LaVanila deodorant you can buy locally at Sephora or Anthropology. I just went down to the Bellingham  and found Jessica Alba’s Honest beauty line face cream at Target last week. It feels so nice and smells great too, it is a deep hydration cream. The eye cream from Arbonne is called RE9 Advanced corrective eye creme and it feels amazing. The lip balm is from doTerrea and is made with essential oils and natural ingredients. I also love to use this Amore Pacific lip treatment in the winter when my lips are very dry, it’s a life saver, it’s also from Sephora. For hand and body cream, I like this alba botanica body butter in mango papaya! I just found this hand cream from the Australian company Om SHE and it is nice and luxurious with argon oil and lavender. What are your favourite beauty staples?

Smoothies with Vega One Protein Powder

vega-goodies

I know it has been waaaay to long since I did a blog post!! I have been so busy. When I first started this blog I seemed to have a lot more free time and energy to keep up the blogging and the new recipes…. Now I barley have time to eat and sleep! I have been thinking about changing the name and purpose of my blog to more of a lifestyle blog so I can blog more about my new passion and career in Home Staging and Decorating. Anyone have any name suggestions??

The good people over at Vega contacted me and asked if I would like to receive some FREE samples and of course I said YES. I love smoothies and I really like adding extra protein to make them more filling. They really hooked me up and send me this very fancy box filled with goodies, including almond milk and 5 different flavours to try! I really liked the chocolate and the mocha. I like to blend my Vega One powder up with frozen bananas, avocado and almond milk. I think I will go pick up some frozen berries this weekend and make some vanilla shakes ASAP. 😉 What is your favourite flavour or smoothie recipe?

Happy Sunday! I saw a friend on Facebook post a similar recipe the other day and it looked so good, I had to try making it. Of course I made my own version of it. 😉 You could also fill there with ricotta or cottage cheese! I have been having such a busy summer I have had no time to cook or blog so I apologize for being mostly MIA.

Gluten Free Strawberry and Apple Crisp

I love summer, and it’s almost here. That being said, I am feeling the summer “pressure” to get into bikini body shape. I have also been feeling really bloated lately which makes me look “fat”. Which is also even more motivating for me to improve me diet. I am in a constant struggle with myself. On the one hand I love being able to eat whatever I want, like cheese and bread, but I always pay for it in stomach pain and extra weight. On the other hand, I really do love eating health and feeling my best. So starting now I am going to get back to eating foods that make me feel good without giving me stomach issues. Starting with this healthy gluten free dessert. 😉 I am all about balance! I never want to feel deprived or like Im on a stingy diet.

Quick and Easy Potato & Chickpea Curry

IMG_0521

It’s Sunday Funday today friends! It’s the only day of the week my boyfriend has off work so I get really excited… 🙂 We might do the grouse grind hike today or head to Commercial Drive for the Italian Day Festival?! I posted a photo of this curry I made the other night on Instagram and was asked for the recipe. So I am sharing it with you now. It is one of the easiest things to make, I swear. It is flavourful and healthy, winning!  My two secret ingredients are this curry powder (from Spice Works) mix and micro greens. I have tried to mix curry spices on my own but they just never taste as good so I cheat and use this package, and I don’t feel guilty at all. 😉 I found this spice mix at Hopott Farms but I’m sure they sell it at other retailers. Micro greens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, mustard and beetroot. You can buy micro greens at most health food stores. They are picked just after the first leaves have developed and add a healthy kick an flavour to any meal.

I hope you like this curry as much as we do!

Smoothie Bowl with Raw Date Granola

Raw granola and smoothie bowl

Happy Sunday! I have a confession to make….I have really fallen off the wagon with my diet these last few months! I have been eating cheese and bread and everything in between. I don’t feel my best when I eat like this so I am going to get back on track starting right now. If I put it in writing here it will help me stay on track. 😉 I get really bloated form eating dairy and bread so its a win win. I feel better and I look better. I am going to Mexico in August for a wedding and would love to wear my bikinis instead of my one piece….. So time to get working out and making better food choices daily!

This fruit smoothie bowl is a step in the right diction. You can use whatever fruit you like but it has to be frozen so that it ends up like ice cream consistency. I like to freeze my bananas when they are nice and spotty and soft. This raw date granola is the perfect topper, its sweet and healthy! I also like to add super foods to mine as well. This one has hemp seeds and chia seeds on it.

Do you know what’s in your Deodorant?!

Agent Nateural

I have know for a while now that regular drugstore deodorant is full of nasty things that I DON’T want on or in my body! Did you know that most deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum and other harmful ingredients? Antiperspirants also stop you from sweating which is a natural bodily function and doing so is not a good idea. Some studies even go as far to say that deodorant is one of the leading causes of breast cancer. This is all very scary stuff and after speaking with my naturopathic doctor about my own under arm lymph nodes… I decided to stop using these nasty products. I’m not willing to take any chances!

The hard part for me was to find a natural deodorant that was aluminium free and didn’t make me smell like a hippy or a sweaty beast! 😉 I have spent the last 2 years and hundreds of dollars on different kinds….some work better then others but none of them won me over until last week.

I found my new best friend. 😉 This Agent Nateur holi(stick) is amazing! It smells nice, it has nice packaging and it’s organic. It was a bit pricey but I don’t care! I have been using it everyday in this hot weather and it is doing it’s job perfectly!! I am beyond the moon happy. If you are like me and are still trying to find a good pit stick, please try this one. If you have another favourite brand please share with me in the comments below.

It is originally from one of my favourite authors and bloggers Danielle Walker from Against All Grain. If you have not seen or heard of her yet, check her out. 😉 These waffles are so filling with the cashews and eggs and I like to eat them with maple syrup and berries! Enjoy.

Perfect Popcorn Recipe

Stove top popcorn

Happy Monday! 🙂 Who loves popcorn?! The last time I had movie theatre popcorn my stomach was not happy for the next few hours….. So I decided to make my own at home and it was so freakin yummy and way healthier I might add.  I think of popcorn as a treat so I’m ok with the butter that I used on it. 😉 If you haven’t tried nutritional yeast, now is the time.  It adds such a nice cheesy flavour to the popcorn.

I haven’t made microwave popcorn in years, since I know it is soooo bad for me. I used to use an old fashioned air popper but this stove top recipe tastes better and is way easier then digging in my cupboard for the air popper! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Health Trips for Travel and Vacation

Plane snacks

OMG I’m so excited to be leaving next week for my first real vacation in over 2 years! 🙂 I am going to Hawaii for my very first time. I can’t wait to see how beautiful it is. It is a special trip as I am going with my boyfriend and his whole family and it will all be our first time. I thought I would put together a post on some of my travel essentials and what kind of snacks I like to bring with me on the plane. I personally do not enjoy plane food, so I am going to be prepared with lots of yummy healthy snacks and make sure I eat a good meal before I board the plane.

I am bringing some trail mix, coconut water, snack bars, almond butter, tea and oatmeal. The tea and oatmeal will also be for me to make for breakfast in the apartment we rented. I hate to be stuck without food! lol I think having some of your favourite go to foods in your carry on is a great idea. 😉

Skin essentials for travel

I always feel like my skin gets super dehydrated on the plane so I’m bringing my favourite lip balm, water to rehydrate and some moisturizing skin cream. I also found some great natural sunscreen that is paraben and nonoparticle free! My face cream is also paraben free and has an SPF of 25 so I don’t get a sun burn. I love my a nice tan but I hate getting burnt. I have had my share of vacation burns and I don’t enjoy them one bit. As I head into my mid thirty’s my skin is way more important to me. I have noticed a few small sun posts in my hair line and need to be more diligent with suncream up there.

I also bought myself some new reading material for the plane. I’m bringing my book that I have been neglecting as well as one food and health magazines, one fitness magazine and one fashion magazine. I think I covered all my bases. 😉

If any of you have any great travel tips or advice on where to go and eat in Oahu, please leave me comment below.
