My Favorite “Natural” Beauty Products

OMG I cant believe it’s September already! Where did the summer go?! I love summer, but I adore fall. 聽I’m getting excited for sweaters, boots and pumpkin spice lattes. 馃槈 I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourite beauty products with you. I never used to read the label of beauty products and check out their ingredients. These days I’m more concerned about what I’m putting into and onto my body. There are a lot of nasty, harmful 聽ingredients in makeup, shampoo and creams that get absorbed into your body, yuck! So I try to buy products that are FREE from parabens, paraffins, phthalates, formaldehyde and aluminum. It’s not easy to know what each ingredient does and if it’s bad for you. My rule of thumb is to buy deodorant that is free from aluminum, as it is thought to be cancer causing. For creams and shampoo, I try to buy brands that state that the are free from parabens and sulphates. Once I find a brand I like and trust its a lot easier to go shopping!

I do have to order some of my favourite products online, like the PiperWai聽charcoal deodorant I use. The LaVanila deodorant you can buy locally at Sephora or Anthropology. I just went down to the Bellingham聽聽and found Jessica Alba’s Honest beauty line face cream at Target last week. It feels so nice and smells great too, it is a deep hydration cream. The eye cream from Arbonne is called RE9 Advanced corrective eye creme and it feels amazing. The lip balm is from doTerrea聽and聽is made with essential oils and natural ingredients. I also love to use this Amore Pacific lip treatment in the winter when my lips are very dry, it’s a life saver, it’s also from Sephora. For hand and body cream, I like this alba botanica body butter in mango papaya! I just found this hand cream from the Australian company Om SHE and it is nice and luxurious with argon oil and lavender. What are your favourite beauty staples?

Health Trips for Travel and Vacation

Plane snacks

OMG I’m so excited to be leaving next week for my first real vacation in over 2 years! 馃檪 I am going to Hawaii for my very first time. I can’t wait to see how beautiful it is. It is a special trip as I am going with my boyfriend and his whole family and it will all be our first time. I thought I would put together a post on some of my travel essentials and what kind of snacks I like to bring with me on the plane. I personally do not enjoy plane food, so I am going to be prepared with lots of yummy healthy snacks and make sure I eat a good meal before I board the plane.

I am bringing some trail mix, coconut water, snack bars, almond butter, tea and oatmeal. The tea and oatmeal will also be for me to make for breakfast in the apartment we rented. I hate to be stuck without food! lol I think having some of your favourite go to foods in your carry on is a great聽idea. 馃槈

Skin essentials for travel

I always feel like my skin gets super dehydrated on the plane so I’m bringing my favourite lip balm, water to rehydrate and some moisturizing skin cream. I also found some great natural sunscreen that is paraben and nonoparticle free! My face cream is also paraben free and has an SPF of 25 so I don’t get a sun burn. I love my a nice tan but I hate getting burnt. I have had my share of vacation burns and I don’t enjoy them one bit. As I head into my mid thirty’s my skin is way more important to me. I have noticed a few small sun posts in my hair line and need to be more diligent with suncream up there.

I also bought myself some new reading material for the plane. I’m bringing my book that I have been neglecting as well as one food and health magazines, one fitness magazine and one fashion magazine. I think I covered all my bases. 馃槈

If any of you have any great travel tips or advice on where to go and eat in Oahu, please leave me comment below.

New Year, New Beginnings!

new-year-main

Happy New Year 2016! 馃檪 I have had a nice break from work and blogging over the holidays and now it’s time to get back in the game. I love Christmas, but I definitely find I lose my workout routine and my stellar eating habits over the holidays. So many christmas parties and family gatherings it’s easy to give in to temptation. Now that it’s January it’s time to refocus on being healthy and feeling my best. I don’t like the word diet, as it has so many negative emotions attached to it. I like eating a certain way and feel it should be a lifestyle not a quick fix diet. My eating habits change monthly and yearly as I search for what makes me feel the best with my Crohn’s issues. I plan on doing a bit of a body reset this week to really kickstart the new year and heal my gut from the holiday binge.

IMG_8882

I am going to sit down this weekend and set some monthly and yearly goals. It is easier to achieve what you want when you have a plan set into place. 2015 was a huge year for me career wise, lot’s of big changes, I am doing work that I love and I get to make my own hours, it is a dream come true. I am going to Hawaii in March and I’m so excited. It will be my first time! I really want to get into great shape before then, so I can feel my best and feel confident in my bikini. I haven’t made a long list of new years resolutions but as always I want my health to be a big priority. I have also decided to go the whole year without shopping. I have so many pairs of shoes and clothes. I certainly don’t NEED anything new this year. I was inspired by an article I read in a magazine about having less stuff and being less of a consumer. I have tried to go without shopping before and I lasted 1 month. I really hope I can achieve my goal of the whole year. If I do it, I plan to reward myself with something special. 馃槈

I hope you all have an amazing 2016 and that this is your best year yet!! If anyone is interested in learning more about health coaching and how I can help you achieve some of your health goals. Please email me, my contact info is on the about me page.

How to Stay On Track with Your Health Goals This Winter

Winter

Happy Sunday! 馃檪 Here in Vancouver it’s starting to feel very winter like, every night this week the temperature has dropped below freezing. I have had my fire place on everyday and my slippers are on 24/7. 馃槈 I think it is universal that most people put on a few pounds over the winter……..but you don’t have to! It’s hard not to crave those comfort foods that may not be the healthiest and it’s not so motivating to go for a run in the freezing cold or pouring rain! I have a few suggestions on how to stay on tack this winter.

First of all, you don’t have to weigh yourself everyday but checking in once a week or once a month is a good way to monitor if you have been overindulging. I also like to see how my clothes fit, if my pants are all feeling too tight, it’s time to take a look at my eating habits. It’s easy to hide behind the oversized sweaters and leggings all winter, but make sure your old clothes fit. 馃槈 If you love a sport or yoga or working out, it definitely helps. For those of you who don’t, it’s nice to set fitness goal that 聽you can work towards like signing up for a 5km or 10km run in the spring to train for. I did a 30 day challenge one year where I did 100 squats a day. I have never felt fitter in my life when I finished.

running

If you love comfort food like creamy pastas, french fries and pizza, I totally get it. I love these foods too! They are ok to indulge in once and and a while. I use the 80/20 rule, eat healthy 80 percent of the time. If you want to eat these comfort foods more often there are many ways to make healthier versions of your favourite dish. Instead of french fries make yam fries at home. If you love a creamy pasta try this roasted red pepper pasta. I can’t stop myself from eating pizza so I make it at home with gluten free crust and I use organic fresh ingredients and goat cheese mozzarella!

Gluten Free Pizza

Last but not least, don’t go overboard over the holiday season! It’s way to easy to eat too many Christmas cookies at the office or have to0 much eggnog at that christmas party. Be mindful this holiday season and don’t overeat, plan ahead and eat as healthy as you can before going to a holiday event. I will be sharing a guest blog later this week on how to prevent overeating this holiday…stay tuned.

The Crohn’s Chronicles: Part 1

Me vic

I normally post about the newest health trend, wellness tip or recipe on my blog, but I decided to start a series of posts (for those interested) on me and my health struggles. My boyfriend said it best the other day, he said although my blog posts are easy to read, they don’t tell the reader that much about you. So I’m going to start sharing bits and pieces of my life story and my journey to heal my body from Crohn’s disease.

I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s back in 1999, the summer after I graduated high school. I guess I had had the disease for much longer but my symptoms weren’t diagnosed until I was hospitalized that summer with shooting pain in my right side.If you don’t know what Crohn’s disease is, let me give you a little background information. Crohn’s is described as a聽chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, especially the colon and ileum, with no know cause or cure.聽When I have a flare up, my worst symptoms include, gas, bloating, multiple trips to the bathroom and a sharp stabbing pain on my right side. If you were diagnosed with this disease, you would聽usually see聽several specialists and they would recommend that you take harsh prescription drugs indefinitely to mask your symptoms. I did just that, I went on some drugs for a few months but they did not help me with the pain I was in. Once I realized that聽the drugs weren’t helping, I was scheduled for a colonoscopy and a small surgery to remove some of my intestine. When the surgeon went in to see what was going on, they found that a few inches of my intestine had built up so much scar tissue that a pencil could not fit through it! They removed the damaged section of my bowels and I started to feel a whole lot better. 馃檪

After the surgery, I felt pretty good for the next few years.聽At this stage of my life I was in my early 20’s and didn’t want to believe that my diet and lifestyle were related to my Crohn’s flare ups. It was probably around age 25 when I decided to do some research on the internet to find other bloggers/people who had used food and natural medicine to help with their Crohn’s disease symptoms. I tried taking probiotics, making herbal teas and eating umboshi plums when I would have flare ups. Sometimes they seemed to help, other times they didn’t.

When I finally hit 30 I stared to see a naturopath and she told me the 2 things I didn’t want to hear. “You should cut out gluten and dairy from your diet.” No more bread and cheese! This was going to be an uphill battle. I cut out cheese for short periods of time but it always seemed to creep back into my diet. What can I say….. I’m addicted! Bread has a similar story, I would give it up here and there but I didn’t think it was the main culprit so I would start eating it again. I find it extremely hard to avoid whole food groups that my son and boyfriend are still eating…..

This past summer, my Crohn’s symptoms reeded their ugly head again. By September I was fed up and I decided to try a very extreme diet that has many devotees. It is called the SCD Diet, and it’s main goal is to heal your leaky gut and help your body reduce the inflammation that is wreaking havoc. I went pretty hard core on it for the first month. You must avoid all聽grains, sugar, alcohol, nightshade vegetables, dairy or raw vegetables in the first phase. There are a few other diet restrictions as well and I found myself struggling, especially when I wanted to go out and have a social life. I’m now nearing the end of October and I have decided to allow myself to eat rice, and a few other grains on occasion to make my life easier. My main goal is to feel better, and for the most part I do. I’m way less bloated and it’s truly a gift. If you have ever felt awful after a meal and you just want to go home and put on your fat pants, you know how I felt 70% of the time!

I totally believe that every one is an individual and what works for one person may not work for another. I’m keeping track of the foods that make me feel bad and the foods that seem to be right for me at this time in my life. I started eating chicken again which I had not eaten in over 2 years, but with this SCD diet I needed more protein to feel full and so I am ok with eating small amounts of chicken and fish in my diet agin.

This is just a sneak peak into some of my health history. I hope by sharing my story I can help other people who might be struggling with similar health issues. I really do believe that diet and lifestyle are the keys to our health. I’m looking forward to this next chapter of my life where I can feel more in control of my body. Health is wealth!!

Natural Beauty Remedies

natural Beauty remedies

What is your beauty regimine? Mine is and always will be pretty low key. I am not one to wash my face every night and use a bunch of different products like face washes and exfoliators. I can barley remember to take off my makeup at night……..! I do however have to battle the same beauty issues as most women. Sometimes me teeth need a little whitening, my skin needs a little exfoliating and my hair needs a little damage repair. 馃槈 Over the years I have come across some pretty crazy claims made by cosmetic companies and marketers. The beauty tips I am about to 聽give you will not change your life or your face but they will help a little in the area you are wanting to fix. If they don’t work for you, can just put the ingredient back in your kitchen. 馃槈

This first beauty remedy I love, whiting your teeth with banana peels! So easy and so simple. I used to go out and spend lots of money on those bleach whitening trays. I don’t like the fact that they contain nasty chemicals that end up being swallowed…..GROSS! Now that I know better I will stick to baking soda and banana peels. First dry your teeth, then take a piece of banana peel and rub the inside skin on all of your teeth. Let it sit on your teeth for 10 minutes, then brush it off. For best results, repeat this 7-10 times. I definitely noticed that my teeth were whiter after just the first few times. 馃檪

Image
The second beauty remedy is for black heads. I hate the little blackheads that appear on my nose. Honey can help, it acts as a natural antibiotic that helps to pull out the dirt from your pores by clearing the blackheads! 馃檪 聽It also hydrates and tightens the skin pores for a clearer complexion. Honey is also know to be great for nourishing and moisturizing your skin to get a natural shine. Just put some honey on your “problem” area of your face, let sit for 15 minutes, then wash off.

Last but not least, lets talk about dry damaged hair. I defiantly suffer form this problem, after lots of bleach, hot styling tools and chlorinated pools my hair definitely needs some extra TLC. You can go to any hair salon and spend a fortune on expensive hair masks and hair oils or you can go to your panty and grab the coconut oil. To apply the coconut oil, melt 3-5 tbs and then work through your hair form root to tip, combing thru evenly. Leave it on your hair overnight and wash it out in the morning with shampoo! Some benefits for using coconut oil on your hair are: 聽stimulating hair growth, preventing dandruff, 聽moisturizes dry hair, adds luster, shine and softness hair, prevents hair breakage and split ends, slows down hair loss. 馃檪

natural beauty products

I also have some natural beauty products that contain these ingredients in my bathroom. 聽I love my sugar and coconut body scrub. My green tea face mask is organic and contains raw honey and bee pollen. My coconut milk hair serum has coconut oil, coconut milk and egg whites to help stop hair breakage. I hope one or all of these natural beauty remedies works for you! Have a great weekend.

DIY Framed Message Board, with Guest Blogger Katherine

DIY Message Board

I love decorating and making DIY projects I find on Pinterest! These days I just haven’t been finding the time to do much of either,聽 I spend most of my free聽 time playing in the kitchen. 馃槈 I thought it would be great to have to have a guest blogger share something other then a recipe. Katherine blogs over at The Pampered Baby, she is somewhat of a super mom! On her blog she shares everything from healthy baby products to recipes , money tips and DIY projects. It’s a space for moms to share their thoughts on parenting, life and everything in between. 馃檪 I was thrilled when Katherine wanted to share this DIY message board project with my readers.

DIY Framed Message Board

I love a unique way to display photos and finding cute ways to stay organized. Making your own framed cork board is a pretty way to display photos or help you keep all of your random papers and reminders in one place (these are also a great d茅cor idea for weddings, baby showers, etc.). Clutter free and cute? Sounds good to me! All you need are a few items you鈥檝e probably already got on hand and maybe a trip to the dollar store and you鈥檙e set! Skip the premade store bought options & make your own as a fun DIY project for a fraction of the cost (mine cost a grand total of $10!).

Materials:

  • corkboard *
  • chalk paint
  • picture frame ($2, garage sale)
  • glue gun
  • tacks/ push pint
  • rhinestones ($2, dollar store)
  • fabric (optional)
  • ribbon (optional)

* I made my own cork board so I could customize the size to fit an existing frame I already had by gluing 2 pieces of foam core board together topped with a sheet of cork (all picked up at the dollar store for a total of $6). You can also buy one from a big box/ office supply store & cut it to size with a saw.

Directions:

  1. Start by painting your frame; I love chalk paint because it doesn鈥檛 require priming or special prep and dries fast. Simply paint on 1 -2 coats to reach your desired coverage. Old vintage frames look especially beautiful when updated with a fresh coat of paint.
  2. Measure the inside back of your frame & reduce it by an 1/8 of an inch to allow a little wiggle room for the cork board & cut your cork board to size.
  3. If you鈥檇 like to glam up the look of the cork, you can paint or cover it with a durable fabric (don鈥檛 use something too thin or delicate). Use mod podge or a glue gun to affix the fabric to the cork board.
  4. Run glue around the inside back of the frame and insert your cork board; press and hold for about 10 seconds until the glue sets. Flip over and remove any strands of glue.
  5. Glue rhinestones to tacks/ push pins for a decorative touch.
  6. Depending on the frame you use, you may have to find a creative way to attach it to your wall. A cute way to hang your cork board is to hot glue a piece of ribbon to the back of the frame. You could also attach hanging hardware on the back & hang from a hook in the wall. These are also cute propped on a table as part of a vignette.

There are so many ways you can use one of these and would be especially cute in a kid鈥檚 room to display photos & artwork (I鈥檓 making a similar one for my daughter鈥檚 room). Finding creative ways to organize and decorate can lead you to tackle some fun projects and save money; plus a DIY project is a great thing to do with a friend or your kids. I hope you enjoy!

Wow, this is kind of a scary post for me……I am letting you all into my very personal and private health history. I grew up in a small town with very health conscious parents. When I was very young my mom cooked everything from scratch. Our family was vegetarian and I thought I was pretty healthy. When I finished high school, I聽began聽being hospitalized for severe pain on the lower right side of my midsection. At first they thought it was appendicitis but I later found out that I have the autoimmune聽disease called Crohn’s. I briefly tried taking antibiotics to help my symptoms but after a few months I realized that they were not working for me. I was then scheduled for surgery to remove some of my scarred and damaged intestine…….too much info?! I went into remission after the surgery and I have not been on conventional medications since. However I do still have flare ups and I have spent the last 10 years trying to find a diet and a life balance that works for me and my health issues.

[/one_half]

Health Books

I have always had a love for reading and over the years I have bought quite a few books on health and diet. I’m always searching for that ‘perfect” diet that will work for my body. I now know that there is no perfect diet, everyone is different and you have to respect bio individuality. I recently enrolled at the 聽Institute For Integrated Nutrition. I am pursuing my dreams to not only help myself become the healthiest I can be but also so I can help others become healthier. When I finish my program this year I will be a certified health coach! I am learning so much about different ways of eating including: gluten free, vegan, eating for your blood type, macrobiotics and the zone diet. The last 3 weeks I have spent eliminating foods that I think my body may be sensitive too, I am quite聽sure that my body does bot agree with dairy and wheat. This will be a life long quest for me but I know that I will be feeling my best very soon. I am sure that I will share more about my health findings and story in the future but I just wanted to give you a little bit of background about me and my health. 馃檪 If you have a health story or can relate I would love to hear from you. I have always believed that this saying is so true “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. I know that I can control my auto-immue symptoms with proper nutrition and keeping my life balanced and stress free.

Who Is More Excited for Kindergarten?!

back to school backpack

When I was a kid it was a love hate relationship with going back to school. I hated that summer lake days were over but I loved going back to school shopping and seeing my friends again. My son Preston is very excited to start school this year. It is too bad that the school year here in British Columbia has not started yet due to a strike! I hope it is resolved soon. I had so much fun going out and buying back to school clothes and supplies for my little guy. I did however forget what a dou-tang was….lol. I know kids don’t care that much how they dress when they are 5 years old….but I couldn’t help getting preston some cool threads from h&m and the Gap. 馃槈 I want him to look super cute on his first week of school. I know some parents have anxiety letting there little ones leave the nest for school. I am more excited then anxious but I do hope that he makes friends and is well behaved… 馃檪 I am excited for this next chapter and I know that school will be great for my son, he is so smart and I think he is going to love learning. What are you most excited聽or anxious about for this school year? I would love to hear your feed back. Please please leave me a comment. 馃檪
